Artist's Statement: In the 2016-2017 school year, High Tech High Chula Vista (HTHCV) went through our second WASC accreditation process. A portion of this process asked us to evaluate how we incorporate various stakeholders into the school’s structures and decisions. At the time, I realized how much we ask of our parents/families at HTHCV. We ask them to drive for field trips; provide food on testing days; donate items to the classroom; attend Student Led Conferences (SLCs), Presentations of Learning (POLs), and exhibitions; ensure that their children have POL attire, arrange transportation to internship; and sign and provide consent for a range of field trips including college day, project related trips, and team building overnight trips. I believe that the goal of these requests is to incorporate families into the fabric of the school, but in reflecting on this incorporation I realized we don’t provide many opportunities to include family/parent voices into these structures and decisions. The planning and creation of what we do is often akin to a black box to parents whose presence is often only requested for the final product/outcome. For this particular fieldwork project, I wanted to include parents in a key family connection structure: Student Led Conferences in order to value and honor their voice in our school community. My reflection on this work is attached below.
